Visions of Egg Tarts and Tasty Low Tea

There is a pastry in Hong Kong I always ate growing up: egg tarts or daan taat in Cantonese. Freshly baked every day, the crust is extremely flaky, and filled with smooth, silk-like egg custard. It is absolutely delicious!

Whenever I see Crème Brulée I think of egg tarts because the custard has a very similar flavor.

Egg tarts have made quite a journey to get to Hong Kong. They are based on the original French fruit tart.

The fruit tart was the original inspiration for the Hong Kong egg tart. I love those too, but that has to be the subject of another post!

Eventually, the fruit tart transitioned to the British custard tart which then inspired the Hong Kong egg tart.

The perfect complement for an egg tart has to be a nice hot tea. Typically, you munch on an egg tart and drink a hot black tea with milk. This makes for a nice low or afternoon tea snack.
