Maitake Tempura

Maitake Tempura

The next time you hang out at a Japanese restaurant with a friend, chilling out after work maybe, ask about Maitake mushrooms! These are great for a snack.

I find it strange that many people, mostly it seems in North America, are afraid of mushrooms. Or they only eat one or two kinds. Maybe because the word “fungus” is also used to describe mushrooms, and in English that gives them sort of an unfair, negative, creepy feel.

I feel happy in one sense that this fear persists (because that leaves more yummy fried mushrooms for me), I also feel sad for all of these mushroom-phobic people who are missing out on a wonderful, flavorful world of food.

Maitake mushrooms grow on trees, most often on oak trees and they are prevalent in North America, so please get over your fear North Americans!
